Motherland (Benmore & BluBird)

“Drink the love and become part of the African coffee community”

These interiors cater to every customer’s need. The take-away, sit down, computer-based or book-loving coffee connoisseur now has a place to call home.

As coffee began in Africa, it’s only natural that South African architects were contracted to take Motherland Coffee’s interiors into the future. Although staying true to the original interiors of the Rosebank and Dunkeld branches, Urban Habitat has played with ceiling levels, lighting and textural contrasts that give this branch a unique feel. Unlike other branches, differentiation in ceiling and lighting heights, as well as seating arrangements, separate the single store area into five distinct, and yet fluidly interconnected, spaces. The dropped, geometric ceiling of warm wood guides the take-away customer from order through to collection, and is mirrored in the reading area with its lowered, softer lighting.

Although exposed face brick is the traditional Motherland choice of walling, structural weight constraints afforded Urban Habitat Interiors the opportunity to design and lay custom, herringbone tiles. The tile design is inspired by the classic grey Motherland mugs and complements the natural feel introduced by other materials used such as wood, leather and cork. The overall ambience of this coffee haven is welcoming and encourages one to linger over that second (or third) cup of coffee.
